Role Playing
----------------------------------

role-play (rlpl)
v. role-·played, role-·play·ing, role-·plays
To assume deliberately the part or role of; act out.

Role-playing is the act of playing a character in a world like or different from our own. The amount of skill used to role-play varies from person to person, and is usually affected by typing skills and imagination. If you don't have imagination, chances are your posts will end up rather shallow ...

For example ...

Cloud punches Sephiroth and he dies "haha i win!"

That's a very poor RP post; it has god-modding (auto-hitting, meta-gaming, power-playing) and spelling that could easily be corrected using the spell check function built into Proboards .

On the subject of god-modding ... God-modding is a very common trait among amateur role players. It basically makes your character(s) akin to that of a god, or so powerful that they're invincible.

That's a no. Know why? There are no such things in any world, real or imagined. To some, Cloud might be all-powerful, but he has weaknesses, just like any normal human being.

Auto-hitting is a category under god-modding; its name explains itself. For example...

Cloud ducked to the right, avoiding Sephiroth's vertical slash. Bringing his right knee up, he drove it into Sephiroth's stomach, forcing the attacker to back off, gasping for air.

No. Cloud might be skilled, but attack has a chance that it will not land. However, you must also take into account the skill of your opponent - is he/she stronger or weaker?

Meta-gaming is the usage of OOC information (see below) in IC (in character) events. For example, if I post in the chat box, saying that my weakness is cats, and my enemy capitalizes on it by bringing a truck full of felines to my characters' abode, that's meta-gaming.

Power-playing is when you control another character that you are not role playing as. Take the same paragraph, for instance ...

Cloud ducked to the right, avoiding Sephiroth's vertical slash. Bringing his right knee up, he drove it into Sephiroth's stomach, forcing the attacker to back off, gasping for air.

The italicized and bold sentence is the part where power-playing takes place. It is up to the other person to state that they have been hit, not you.

Basic RPing Rules
----------------------------------

• If you're talking OOC (Out of Character, meaning a statement made not part of the role play), it's best to make it clear in some way by using parentheses, arrow signs, or other such methods.

I.e., <<This is a good way to show that you're in OOC>>; ((This is also another commonly used style)); {Rarely used, but still as effective}; [Again, rarely used, but still as effective].

• Try to be courteous with your fellow role-players. Like you, they're looking to have a good time, so please, do your best to oblige them as they would for you.

• In fights, always remember one thing - take punches as your character would. If your character is a warrior, slow and strong, then he/she shouldn't be able to dodge a high-speed attack from a faster character. Taking blows always adds to the variety of confrontations.

• Post length is always an important factor determining if you're a no0b or 1337. If you consistently post one sentence answers, chances are no one is going to enjoy role playing with you. However, if you usually post three to four sentences, but occasionally do one-liners, then you're fine.

That's pretty much it for the basics of role playing. If you managed to read this far without going to sleep, congratulations. Have a cookie.

So ... remember the rules to role playing, and you'll do alright. If you need help with your typing speed (i.e., you take too long in typing up a reply) I recommend you take a few typing classes or download a typing program.

Have fun! If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the Help Desk.
