 Undesired Training! [Ashe]
« Thread Started on Jan 22, 2009, 8:59pm »

The Queen said she didn't want training. She said she was good enough as is, having the treaty blade and being capable in magic. Well, Saber thought she was good enough to beat any foe that faced Nabradia and look at what happened then. She refused to let the same thing occur to the Queen of Dalmasca and to do so, it was time for training. The trainees were off practicing archery today and as it seemed, the Queen had no important business to attend to. Rather than sit around, Saber wanted to make good use of their time and get in some sword play practice.

Making her way out to the courtyard, she wielded Excalibur and made sure it was handling alright. As expected, it was perfectly fine. She slid it back into Avalon, the sword settling into place with a satisfying click, and she held her arms out as her armor was formed, fitting to her dress like always. She felt so much more at home in her armor than without it, as she knew she would be ready for an enemy attack, which she knew all too well could come at any moment.

The plan for the training was to just get some basic sword play practice in, not calling in any magic, and see how well their Queen fairs. If she met Saber's standards, then she'd add Mana Boost to her attacks to see how the Queen faired then. If she managed, then it'd probably be a full out fight minus their more powerful attacks, or in the Queen's case, summons. However, she doubted it'd go that far until a few sessions later. For now, she wanted to try and keep it on the simple side, merely regular sword fighting to keep them both ready.

"I wonder where M'Lady is.....if she tries to skip out on this, I will have to personally drag her out of the Palace myself." Saber thought out loud as she looked upward into the sky, one armored hand resting on the hilt of Excalibur. Things were peaceful....though she wondered how long it would stay. How long until a full-blown enemy attack? Peace like this never lasted forever, and she wanted to try and figure out when this peace would end. That way, they could prepare to counter any threat facing the Kingdom. She didn't intend to let Dalmasca die out and be taken over like Nabradia.

It could be said that the Queen of Dalmasca was hiding. Now, why would someone such as Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca need to hide? Really, it was quite simple. Training. Something Ashe was rather sure she did not need. Of course, she placed herself through her own practice sessions to make sure she would not become lax in her skills. Though, this reason did not seem to apply to a certain Royal Knight of hers. True, Saber had only come into her employ recently, but Ashe trusted the skilled Knight wholly. She had shown her worth in skill and her unwavering loyalty to her. It seemed this loyalty, though, was becoming a bit of a problem. Ashe was a Queen who was used to doing what she pleased. If there was something she wanted, she simply used her determination to acquire it.

Ashe had found her stubborn nature often clashed with what Saber thought was best for the young Queen. She firmly believed that Ashe did not need to fight, as she was royalty. Once when she was young, the Queen may have agreed with her, but not now. Ashe had been through so much these past three years. She had lost her throne, had faked her own death, and she had lead the Resistance against the Archadian Empire to reclaim her throne and her kingdom. The young Queen did not believe she needed this extra training of Saber's. And there was the fact that Ashe was currently wearing a dress. Her council would not have the Queen of Dalmasca running around in anything less than befitting of her station. She had acquiesced just to quiet the old fools.

Ashe was currently hiding within the palace gardens. Of course, in case Saber did manage to find her, she did have her Treaty Blade with her. Currently, she was sitting on the edge of the fountain that stood center piece in the lavished garden. Graceful willow trees bent over the fountain, and flowers of every hue grew around her. Azure eyes stared into the still waters of the fountain. She had caught no sign of Saber, and she thought herself safe for the moment. Ashe slowly looked about her, that nagging feeling in the back of her mind. The young Queen hastily stood, catching a view of blond locks. Grabbing her Treaty Blade, she took off in a whirl ivory silk skirts. So much for the garden being safe after all.

Dresses. While the queen may hate them, Saber found herself quite attached to her own dress. She was buried in it, she fought in it, it was faithful. It was part of who she was, much like Excalibur and Avalon. Plus, unlike normal dresses, Saber's was made to be flexible in combat and allow her movement. Thus, unlike normal dresses, hers was more along the line of a combat dress of sorts. An unusual concept, but Saber wouldn't be caught in a fight using anything else. After all, her armor was practically crafted to fit the dress anyway.

She was about to head to the palace when she saw a whirl of fabric and the sound of footsteps moving away from her. It didn't take another second to figure out it was the queen. So she was hiding....I'll have to teach M'Lady how to properly behave. Saber thought to herself as she began giving chase to the renegade queen. The queen may have had a lead on her, but Saber was faster. Strength in the legs allowed her to put more force behind each step, plus said royalty had a bit of inhibitance from clothing not suited for such an activity.

Still, Saber felt that she needed to put herself ahead of the Queen in order to stop her. Focusing a bit of her energy into each of her feet, it flowing into the boots. Because of their nature, her armor never broke when she did this. Releasing the energy, she propelled herself forward, flying passed the Queen and somersaulting to a halt in front of her. Her deep green eyes stared right into the azure ones of her Queen and she held her arms out to block the way.

"Halt, M'Lady. As your Knight, I cannot allow you to continue further. You may not like it, but this training is for your own good." she said, her tone strong and her stance unwavering. A true knight, some wonder why she wasn't actually born a guy.

Ashe knew it was hopeless. This dress was a hindrance to her, and she longed for her old armor. The outfit she had worn while traveling with Vaan and the others. It offered protection, and a sensible style of dress in the hot Dalmascan sun. It allowed her to move fluidly, and did not get in the way of her legs when she ran. Of course, the council had hidden her armor somewhere, and the Queen had yet to find it. Ashe still ran as gracefully as any queen would, even with the silk skirts getting in her way, and the heavy sword she held in one hand. Tree passed her vision, though she did not stop. Ashe heard the footsteps behind her, and she knew Saber had caught a glimpse of her.

Her breath were even, and Ashe was hardly fazed by the run. While most ladies within her palace would have collapsed by now, the young Queen found this chase rather easy to keep. She was strong, and she had endured far worse than this. Ashe held the Treaty Blade tightly within her right hand, the Occurian crafted blade glinting in the glaring sunlight. Sometimes she wondered why she kept the blade, which had been meant for her to cut new Nethicite Shards from the Sun-Cryst. Perhaps she wished for some reminder of her accomplishments, and as a tribute to Reddas, who had destroyed the Sun-Cryst on her behalf.

Ashe shook her thoughts away, knowing the chase would soon end. While she thought the dress a hindrance, she knew Saber found no such thing in her own gown. The young Queen watched with a faint grimace as the Royal Knight suddenly landed before her. To stop a collision, Ashe lightly pivoted herself to a stop, her Treaty Blade raised in a defensive stance as she looked to her Knight. Her azure orbs glinted with faint amusement as Saber held out her arms to block her path. If Ashe so wanted, she could escape quite easily, but she had no desire to. A quiet sigh of resignation left her pink lips, and she slowly relaxed out of her stance.

"And most Knights listen to the order of their Queen, Saber," Ashe replied back with a faint smile. She could not fault her, as Saber was only doing what she thought best. "As such, I shall acquiesce to your request, for now," she said. With a sigh, Ashe grabbed a fistful of her silken skirt and hiked it up above her knees. In a moment, she had tied the fabric to the side, allowing her more movement with this training session that would come. Her azure eyes glinted, and the Queen looked to Saber.

"Shall we begin, then?"

Not only was it what she thought was best, it was what she knew was best. Experience was a powerful tool when teaching another, though unfortunately, Saber could not back up her reasoning for the training with that fact. That would most likely cause trouble for herself and everybody else to know she was risen from the dead. A smile of satisfaction grew on her face as the queen gave into her request. That made things much easier.

"Yes, M'Lady. Here seems to be a good spot, so we shall begin with some regular sword practice. No magic or other abilities will be put into use." Saber replied, her strong tone taking a happy twist to it as she pulled Excalibur from its scabbard, the gold and blue designs seeming to glow in the sun. The blade itself seemed to reflect the sun and make itself appear to glow pure white, a sign Saber took that today, the weather would remain perfect.

"Since this is your practice, you will begin the sparring." she said, taking a defensive stance with the blade. She gripped it tightly with both of her armored hands, preparing for the Queen's first attack. Thanks to Avalon, they could practice with actual swords and heal their injuries, allowing better practice. After all, there is no better way to become better with a blade than to use your own, rather than a practice sword. Those blades were mere toys, not having near the same weight or feel of a regular sword.

Ashe watched the smile appear on Saber's lips, and amusement danced in her azure orbs once more. She had no doubt the young woman would have forced her train if she had indeed refused. That was not something Ashe wished to repeat again. She had learned that it was sometimes easier to give into a request. Besides, training would not be so bad. Ashe gripped the Treaty Blade with both hands, sliding herself into a defensive stance once more. "It would not have matter if I had refused, would it?" she asked with a light laugh. The Dalmascan Queen was sure it would not have either way.

"Basic swordsmanship, then?" Ashe asked. That sounded alright to her, as she had no wish to use magic in such a frilly dress as the one she had on. If a fire spell had been sent her way, she was sure it would have burned the excess fabric. How cumbersome these dresses really were at times. Ashe watched as Saber withdrew Excalibur, and the Queen admired the the blade as she often did. Who ever had crafted the sword had done a truly beautiful job. The blade itself was an equal match for the Occurian blade she now held. The blade itself was reflecting the sunlight off the blue gems embedded within the blade of the sword.

Ashe resisted the urge to roll her eyes at Saber's next statement. Of course she would start this spar off first. The young Queen waited for Saber to defend herself, her mind planning out strategies already. Well, is was merely a spar, so perhaps starting off with a simple move would be best. Ashe let herself leap forward, throwing herself into a graceful twirl as she brought the Treaty Blade up in an arc. The move itself was executed well, and her stance was strong as she followed through with a side swipe shortly after. With glinting azure orbs, the young Queen quickly jumped away, stopping herself from following through with a spell next. 'A simple spar,' Ashe reminded herself.

The Treaty Blade was a marvelous blade as well, crafted by the Gods themselves. While Excalibur was no gift from the gods, it was a symbol of the people. That made it more than a match. Saber's grip tightened as the Queen began to move, standing her ground. A knight never retreated from combat, they only knew to advance. The only form of retreat they knew was dodging an attack and countering. Even then, they still advanced.

The technique was flawless, the execution perfect, and the style beautiful. Such things didn't matter on the battle field. Saber easily parried the side swipe, the clang from the two blades clashing echoing through the trees around them. When the queen retreated, Saber's stance returned to its defensive state. She had a grin on her face, she was glad they were doing this. If there was truly a time more than any other that Saber felt comfortable, at home, it was during combat. Whether it is training or actual combat, she feels at ease. It was an unusual thing, though she liked it. It did prove annoying though during peace, as she was almost always on edge, expecting an enemy attack at any moment.

"M'Lady, your technique is beautiful, but your swing has very little force behind it. In a battle, taking too long to perform the attack could end your life." Saber commented, reaffirming her grip on Excalibur's hilt.

Ashe knew she had put know real strength into the move. She was getting a feel for her blade within the confines of her dress. To try and gauge what movements she could make, and what she could not without ripping the gossamer fabric. How delicate and flimsy it was, and how it provided no protection at all in battles. Even in a spar such as this. Her azure orbs narrowed lightly, twirling the Treaty Blade with little difficulty. The young Queen lowered herself into an defensive position once more, shaking her blond bangs from her pale cheeks. Saber had blocked her attack with ease, as she had known she would.

Ashe looked to her Knight, brow quirking at her grin. How odd. Perhaps the young Queen was taking this spar more seriously than she needed to, but she had always done things that way. It was in her nature to take situations seriously, even ones that were mundane. Her sense of enjoyment and ease were things she had learned to abandon when her kingdom had been taken over. When her father and her husband had died. When Ashe had no longer been herself. A small sigh escaped her lips, shaking the thoughts away. Of what use was it to dwell upon the past? Things could not be changed, no matter how much she wished otherwise.

"This is I know, as it is always best to test the limits of what you can do before hand," Ashe remarked with a dry smile. She merely waved her free hand over the silk material of her dress. She tightened her own grip upon her blade, smiling slightly before she had disappeared within a blur. Unlike most queens, Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca was quite good with a sword. Perhaps she did not have as much experience as others, but she was still a formidable opponent when tested. Ashe had appeared behind Saber as quietly as she had disappeared, Treaty Blade raised, slamming in downwards with surprising strength. With her attack executed, Ashe had swept her leg outwards, trying to dislodge Saber's footing, before springing back into the copse of trees in the garden.

Testing was not something that one could afford to do in an actual battle. Saber knew why she was doing so, it was her dress. Such a thing severely limited one's combat ability, she would have to see about getting the Queen a combat-capable dress. It would still be flashy and make the Queen look the part, but should a fight break out, she'd actually be able to defend herself.

"We will have to see about obtaining a combat-capable dress for you, M'Lady." Saber said, making a mental note of the Queen's clear hatred of the dress. She couldn't help but feel some sympathy for her. She knew she'd be annoyed with a normal dress too if she had to try and fight in it. She figured that a combat dress shouldn't look that bad, no one ever had a problem with her own dress when she wore it in public situations, even though it was also the dress she wore to battle, minus the armor. That was something she'd have to talk about after they were done training.

Saber stood her ground as the Queen began her move. She was fast, and while Saber knew she could only move at such a speed in her Saber Lily form, it was still easy to counter. She closed her eyes, listening closely to the movement of leaves and the wind around her to try and figure out where the attack would come from. Speed always left signs of where the enemy went, and this was no exception. While her actual movements weren't noisy, the environment revealed the direction and she heard the wind moving around the incoming blade. Raising Excalibur, she blocked the attack, smirking when she felt the force behind it. It still wasn't entirely that powerful, but it was much better than the previous attack. It was a split second later that the sweep came in and she had to repel the blade, leaping back and doing a hand-spring, landing properly and skidding to a halt.

"Much better, but such a tactic only works in a one on one situation. When dealing with multiple enemies, you cannot afford to leave yourself open like that."

Ashe felt the knot come loose she had done on the voluminous skirts. An agitated sigh escaped her lips, and she knew she would merely have to deal with it for the time being. "I would prefer my old armor, if I but knew where those maids have hidden it," she replied. While her armor may have been well-worn, it as still some that Ashe preferred. It was designed to to accommodate the warm climate of Dalmasca, and it suited her style well. Her azure orbs flickered to Saber, and she brushed back the skirts from over her feet. If she could but find the armor, then she would not feel so adverse to training.

Ashe almost sighed again when her attack was parried. It was disconcerting to the young Queen, as she was used most of her attacks going through. Then again, she was far more skilled than most of the Guards of Dalmasca. She watched with amusement as Saber sprung back, and she raised her Treaty Blade into another defensive position. This training session was something that Ashe did not think she needed, but that was her over confidence speaking. She tilted her head to the side, waiting for Saber's criticism on this move she had performed. Nothing was perfect.

"And is this not one on one? What use would there be to expend unnecessary energy, when I would need it in a more dire situation? I assure you, I can handle myself when there is more than one enemy," Ashe replied. Her tone was not scornful nor rude. She was merely stating what she had learned from Vossler, when he had first taught her how to use a sword. Ashe smiled lightly, her eyes glimmering in amusement. "Please, take the next move, if you will," Ashe requested lightly.

"Ah, but M'lady, you must be presentable. A combat dress will be able to please everyone." Saber replied, a small smile growing on her face. She'd probably end up looking for said armor to appease her Queen, though hold onto it for training sessions only. She'd just have to come up with a way to keep said Queen from fleeing in that outfit. Well, she didn't have mana burst for nothing...

The Queen's style was something one would not believe Royalty to have. It was more reliant on speed and quick strikes, willing to exploit weak points and diversionary tactics. Definitely not something a Knight would do, but it was not her position to try and reteach her how to fight. She merely had to help her improve upon what she already knew.

Her response wasn't beyond what Saber expected, but it was true. She'd have to figure out some way to get the Queen some training with multiple enemies. Perhaps the new recruits could help with that. The smile on Saber's face grew from it, actually. Hearing her speak so intelligibly about combat, it brought a bit relief to Saber's worried heart. At least she had common sense about when to use energy and what techniques to use. Regardless, though, Saber still didn't want a repeat of what happened. Dalmasca would not fall so long as she had anything to say about it.

"Very well, if it is what my Queen desires." Saber responded, her tone firm, yet with a hint of joy in it. Whether it was the Queen's potential or just the feeling she always had when in some form of combat, she wasn't sure. Either way, her grip on Excalibur tightened and she shifted to an offensive stance. Saber's offensive stance put Excalibur's blade behind her, holding it at waist level, with it pointed downward slightly. Whenever she ran with her weapon drawn, she held it in this way with the sharp edge of the sword pointed up and down. This way, she could make a powerful, verticle swing or switch grips and make a horizontal swing.

Saber had to take the least risky route of attack, to prevent serious injury beyond the power of Avalon. Eventually, she decided on a mid-level horizontal swing to get things started. Thus began her charge, her metallic feet crushing the dirt underneath them with each stride. A Knight did not use underhanded tactics such as attacking from behind. However, it does not mean they cannot hit from an unexpected angle. Once she was within range, she switched grips and made the horizontal swing, aiming for it to hit just below the waist if not parried. Her swing was strong, especially for someone her size. It was on par with many of the stronger guards of Dalmasca. Despite her small body, since Saber had seen so much combat and fought so much, she developed plenty of upper body muscle, especially in her arms. They didn't show all of the work they had gone through, but it was there.
